The adventure

We'll meet at a pier in the Marina district of San Francisco located near the Golden Gate Bridge. The views of the water will be spectacular & because of the size of the pier we will have more than enough room to spread out and try our techniques. Be sure to arrive early to find parking and pay for it if need. Once everyone has arrived we will learn to setup the equipment we will supply with very detailed explanation of how and why we use particular gear. Once we have setup our rods, filled our bait in our traps we will learn the different forms of casting and the technique of reeling. Because we are fishing for crab there is a different approach to how you catch crab off of a rod and reel. Because of Department of Fish and Game laws, we will not be allowed to take home any Dungeness crab. This is because the Bay is a protected estuary and we will be crabbing outside of the regular season. As a result we will be catching rock & red crab which are edible and delicious crabs to take home. Please join me as many others have to see if spending an afternoon out on the waterfront of the bay, meeting new people and learning a skill is right for you! Please realize that this is predominantly about learning how to catch crab and is meant to be catch and release only! This will include detailed instructions on how to crab so you can do it yourself!

The plan

1. Meet Up

We'll meet up at Torpedo Wharf in the Marina/Presidio district of San Francisco. I will be either outside of the Warming Hut Cafe or on the pier itself depending on when you show up. Because it can get very busy I usually stand closer to the pier with bunch poles sticking out of my cart. If you booked the afternoon session I will more than likely already be out on the pier. I shouldn't be too hard to spot and I love this location because of the view, accessibility to drinks/snacks and relative ease for catching something!

3. Crabbing Time

Once everyone is setup, we'll start crabbing! The pier is very large, so we'll have plenty of room to spread out and try our techniques. You can crab for as long as you like up to 3 hours. There is easy access to food and drinks as well if you need to take a break.

Your guide

Alex

My name is Alex and I am an avid fisherman and an ocean lover. I am a born and raised San Francisco Native who grew up on the bay's wonderful and diverse coastal lifestyle. After being a sushi chef & a ceviche chef early in my professional career it's no wonder I have an an affinity for quality seafood and fresh sustainable practices. With 10 years of crabbing I have honed my experience and knowledge of these tasty crustaceans. From my time in restaurants and in the service industry for nearly 15 years I came to realize I needed to start my own business encompassing different passions of mine. I have been running "The Art of Crabbing" which is THE original bay area crabbing adventure going for Dungeness. The season for Dungeness goes from Nov-June.
